John Varvatos | Detroit Grand Opening!
It was a homecoming party for Cooper and Varvatos, the Allen Park-bred fashion designer whose high-end line comes with a touch of rock edge — inspired in large part, he said, by “the rebellious, working-class” spirit he was immersed in here before leaving for New York in the 1980s. The 4,600-square-foot shop at Woodward and Grand River will be his 21st around the globe.
The event closed Woodward Avenue to make way for a massive step and repeat wall for John, Alice Cooper, Kate Upton and Justin Verlander, Michael Bolton and other sports stars and musicians.

As much as it was a celebration of Varvatos and rock ‘n’ roll, it was a celebration of the city itself. “Sometimes after you get knocked down, you’re in a better position to succeed,” said Varvatos. “I feel like the city has been knocked down for a long time, but now it’s really going to come back stronger than ever.”
